Gianni (Gianni Di Gregorio), broke and well into his forties, lives with his 93 year old mother, a capricious but refined woman.
When a couple of Gianni's friends, to whom he is in debt, decide to escape from Rome for the mid-August, Ferragosto holiday, Gianni, armed with only a glass of wine and a wry sense of humor, is left behind with four elderly ladies to care for.
When we see the ladies laughing, drinking, eating, and enjoying the company of Gianni and each other, a dilemma is laid bare —either the elderly or the young have to sacrifice themselves for the other. A charming, funny tale of good food, feisty ladies and surprising friendships.
