Sit back and let local surfer and environmentalist Chris Del Moro take you on on intimate journey to discover his roots and the burgeoning surf scene in Italy in the award winning film, Bella Vita.  Before the show, gather for the launch of ZIOBAFFA organic wines — inspired by the film, small bites from local chefs, and Gaia Gelato.  Learn about our incredible partners below.

Bella Vita

Born of mistral winds and witness to the birth of western civilization, the waves of the Italian coast have carried merchants, fishermen, travelers, and kings.  Preserved like a roman ruin, the surf of the Italian coast now carries surfer, artist, and environmentalist Chris Del Moro on a pilgrimage back to his ancestral homeland to explore a culture where old-world-convention and traditional craftsmanship have matured into a modern surf lifestyle and destination.

A visual epic captured in stunning 35MM, Bella Vita is an intimate and powerful journey of self-discovery, steeped in culture, tradition, and passion – where family comes first.

Surfing Madonna LogoThe Surfing Madonna Oceans Project: Inspired by the public artwork by Mark Patterson, the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project hosts a 5k Beach Run and a Half Marathon in Encinitas to raise money for local humanitarian and ocean-related projects. They hold a free ocean education summer camp and they work with special needs people to help them experience the ocean.  The Surfing Madonna artwork was started in Italy using marble from Ravenna and she is the “Italian” link between our organization and the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project.

Screen Shot 2017-04-08 at 6.24.03 PMZIOBAFFA Organic Italian Wines: The creation of these wines, at a zero waste facility in the heart of Tuscany, was inspired by the making of the movie Bella Vita, which took cast and crew around Italy in search of local surfer-environmentalist Chris del Moro’s Italian heritage – and of course, surf.  Chris, the film’s director, Jason Baffa, and vintner Luca Forte are the partners behind the wine. In fact, the grapes harvested in the film were used in the making of the wine you’ll be tasting.

Screen Shot 2017-04-08 at 6.22.09 PMThe Land & Water Co.:  Oceanside native Chef Rob Ruiz and his Carlsbad restaurant The Land & Water Co. were the winners of the Chef/Restaurateur Oceans Award in 2016. Rob is an outspoken advocate for responsibly sourced and traceable seafood and his commitment is reflected in Land & Water’s seasonal menu.

cucina migranteCucina Migrante:  Sicilian Chef Francesco and Adisa share the belief that there is a mutual connection of those who love culture and travel and recognize the importance of food and the dining experience. Their monthly supper club features authentic meals from seasonal and locally grown ingredients, fusing Mediterranean style with flavors from all over the world.

gaiaGaia Gelato: An Italian event is not complete without a taste of gelato. Cousins Paola Richard and Cristina Amoroso brought their expertise and fine Italian-made gelato machines to Carlsbad where they use only the freshest ingredients to make their world-renowned flavors.

producegood-logoProduceGood:  With a year-round growing season, San Diego county is flush with fresh produce.  Yet, 40% of food still goes to waste.  Nita Kurmins Gilson, Jerilyn White, and Alexandra White have set out to change that with ProduceGood, a non-profit organization that harvests the extra bounty in our county and gets it to the needy.

aloe1Aloe Gloe:  When co-founder Danny Stepper gashed his forehead open while surfing, his doctor prescribed not only putting aloe on the cut to help it heal but drinking aloe as well.  The only problem was he couldn’t find any aloe drinks that weren’t full of sugar or organic.  So, he and his friends founded Aloe Gloe.  Aloe Gloe is committed to sustainability at every step from production to market as well as Fair Trade standards, ensuring their farmers sustainability.
