Luca Marinelli’s “Gipsy”

by Tiffany Froese

In the final instalment of our short series on They Call Me Jeeg, Paola Richard takes a look at a classic Italian song that appears in a defining moment in the film.  Don’t miss the screening this Thursday, August 10th at La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas.

Luca Marinelli’s “Gipsy”

By Paola Richard

Where Claudio Santamaria’s “Enzo” is an anti-social petty criminal gifted with superpowers that are reminiscent of Spider-Man (see previous post), his counterpart “the Gipsy” (lo Zingaro) is a narcissistic maniac that resembles Batman’s Joker. Actor and model Luca Marinelli’s portrayal of the villain who fancies himself a rock star is irresistible. In one of the most exhilarating scenes, the Gipsy, who was once a competitor on a popular Italian reality talent show, sings a famous 70s love song in a sequined blazer. The scene has become a cult favourite in Italy, where Anna Oxa’s, Un’emozione da poco, won 2nd place at the Sanremo Music Festival in 1978. The transgressive, and super popular, Italian singer, Oxa, was only 16 when she debuted, dressed as a man, at the most important Italian media event of the time. The tribute offered in the film is undeniably captivating. Here are both versions of the song.
